Erie County

Erie County was created on March 12, 1800, out of part of Allegheny County. It was named after Lake Erie, which had been named for an Indian tribe of the same name. Erie County was attached to Crawford County until 1803. The county seat of Erie was laid out in 1795, incorporated as a borough on March 29, 1805, and chartered as a city on April 14, 1851.
