Jefferson County

Jefferson County was named for President Thomas Jefferson and created on March 26, 1804. It was originally part of Lycoming County. The county was attached to Westmoreland County until 1806 and to Indiana County until 1830 when it was formally organized. The county seat is Brookville which was laid out in 1830 and incorporated on April 9, 1834. Historians believe the borough was named for the many brooks and streams in the vicinity.
