Lehigh County

Lehigh County, formed from part of Northampton County and named for the Lehigh River, was created on March 6, 1812. Lehigh is from the German name "Lecha," and originates with the Indian name "Lechauwekink," meaning "where there are forks." The county seat is Allentown, laid out around 1762, originally incorporated as the Borough of Northampton on March 18, 1811, renamed in 1838, and chartered as a city on March 12, 1867. Allentown was named for William Allen, a chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court during the mid-18th century and a local landowner.
