Northumberland County

Northumberland County was created on March 21, 1772, from parts of five different counties: Bedford County, Berks County, Cumberland County, Lancaster County and Northampton County. Historians believe it was named for an English county with the same name. The county seat is Sunbury, which was laid out in 1772 and named for an English village near London. Sunbury was incorporated as a borough on March 24, 1797, and became a city in 1921.
