THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM
in Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania.
Opened to the public February 12, 2001, the museum
is the first and largest of it's kind, with exhibits on the Union, the
Confederacy, slavery, Reconstruction, an unprecedented collection of
artifacts, and a research archives. Its location in Harrisburg is not without forethought as Harrisburg was a major staging area for hundreds of thousands of Union Troops during the Civil War. Harrisburg was originally the objective to capture for Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Had the capital of Pennsylvania fallen, the outcome of the war might have changed dramatically. Lee's forces found the Susquehanna River and Union defenses too much to overcome and instead led to the Battle of Gettysburg. |

The online encylopedia offers endless articles and information about any topic, including Pennsylvania's history. Caution is urged because of the opportunity for erroneous information through relying on secondary sources. Anyone can modify and add Wikipedia historical data. For the most part, however, the topics do include contributions from professional historians and researchers. |
