Mifflin County

Mifflin County was named for Thomas Mifflin, the first governor of Pennsylvania (1790-1799) following the passage of the state Constitution of 1790. The county was created on September 19, 1789, from parts of Cumberland County and Northumberland County. The county seat of Lewistown was named for William Lewis, a local ironmaster. It was laid out in 1790 and a first attempt at incorporation on April 11, 1795. However, because the first charter was not accepted, it was reincorporated on February 6, 1811.
