bullet Peter EMPFIELD was born on 3 May 1814 in Pennsylvania. (2854)(2855) (2856) Census of 1850 and 1870

While other evidence supports the birth year and month, the day is based on a calculation from the obituary of 6 Feb 1879. Before the obituary was located, the day had been shown as May 2nd. He was a Carpenter & Builder between 1849 and 1879 in Logan Township, Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2857)(2858) (2859)(2860) (2861) He also lived on a farm from which Juniata and the Juniata railroad shops were built, according to his widow's obituary. If he were a carpenter, this brings up the question of farming and at what point the land was sold.
Additional research shows that he was more than just a carpenter. Historical records of Blair County show that he was a builder, responsible for the first county home for the poor and the First Lutheran Church. See the source file for details. He appeared on the census on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa..(2862) Census lists Peter Empfield as a carpenter. The Emfield farm is noted as land that Juniata and the Juniata railroad shops were carved out of. There was a Phillip Foust in the census at the Empfield household. Could Foust have been running the farm on behalf of the Empfields? Or were the Empfields tenants? The former seems more likely. He resided Logan Township between 1851 and 1879 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa..(2863) (2864) He was First Lutheran Church between 1853 and 1879 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(2865) (2866) He was elected as Assessor in 1862 in Blair Co., Pa.. (2867) He appeared on the census on 28 Jul 1870 in Logan Township, Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2868) value of real estate valued at $2000
value of personal property valued at $400 He was elected as Assessor in Feb 1872 in Blair Co., Pa..(2869) He was elected as Assessor in 1873 in Blair Co., Pa.. (2870) He died on 30 Jan 1879 in Empfield Farm, Logan Twp., Blair Co., PA.(2871) (2872)(2873) Died at 5:00 A.M. See John EMPFIELD entry. John Empfield appears in the 1850 census as being 64 years old and is the very next dwelling record. It is possible that John could be Peter's father.
The link can only be made after confirmation of this hypothesis. Parents: John EMPFIELD and Mary Ann TICE.

He was married to Catharine HARTZELL about 1838 in Blair Co., Pa.. (2874)(2875) Catharine was widowed in 1879, nearly 30 years before she died.

bullet Peter EMPFIELD was born in 1847 in Pennsylvania. (2882) He was an Ore miner in 1880 in Huston Twp., Blair Co., Pa.. (2883) This Peter Empfield lived in Huston Twp. near Altoona, Blair Co., Pa. Be careful not to confuse him with Peter Empfield, married to Catherine Hartzell, and also lived near Altoona in Blair County around the same era. Both were likely related, but as of 22 April 2007, the relationship has not been determined.

The Census of 1880 also shows an Elizabeth Etter, age 76, living in the household in Huston Twp., Blair Co. The relationship is unknown. Parents: John EMPFIELD and Sarah BOWERS.

He was married to Sarah ----.(2884) Children were: William H. EMPFIELD, Archie EMPFIELD, Thomas S. EMPFIELD, Ira Benton EMPFIELD.

bullet Sarah EMPFIELD(2885) was born on 22 Sep 1843 in Baker's Station, Huntingdon Co., Pa.. (2886)(2887) (2888) Blair County was not formed until 1846. Baker's Station did not exist when Sarah was born, but was so named at a later date.
Hickey-O'Neill Mortuary listed year of birth as 1844.

Census of 1930 for Arabella Brawn Davis family notes Sarah's state of birth, but not city or date. She appeared on the census on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa..(2889) She resided One-story frame house - Juniata on 21 Nov 1890 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa.. Described as one-story, only 14 feet X 26 feet on a lot 50 X 120 feet.
Sarah, a widow in 1890, made payments of about $800 per month to a building and loan association.
She was a Wash woman and landlady. on 21 Nov 1890 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa.. Widow Sarah supported herself, in addition to a small Civil War Widow's Pension, by doing washing or "living out" by the week. This could be interpreted as a being a landlady.

Her total income did not exceed $6.00 per month. She resided Rear northside Second Ave., near 5th St. in 1898/99 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa.. (2890) She resided on 24 Oct 1907 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa.. (2891) She resided 207 Seventh St. - Juniata on 28 Sep 1916 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa..(2892) She died on 7 Jul 1927 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa.. (2893) Died at 6:45 P.M. at home of her daughter, Mrs. [Mary "Maime"] D. A. McCracken. She resided 710 Sixth St. Juniata, Blair Co. on 7 Jul 1927 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa..(2894) Resided here at the time of her death, the home of her daughter, "Mrs. D. A. McCracken." She was buried on 10 Jul 1927 in Fairview Cemetery, Blair Co., Altoona, PA. (2895) Lot 38 Sec. L - Same location as husband Joseph who died in 1882.
Lot 38 Sec. L also contains DAVIS (5), DEIHL (1) and PIPER (1). She was Methodist in First Methodist Church, Juniata.(2896) The census of 1870 indicates that Sarah might not have been the daughter of Peter Empfield. The census lists a different last name, although the ledger is illegible as to the exact spelling. It appears to be "Bitzurburg", "Ritzuiburg" or "Betzurburg."
Update: Her mother's obituary of 1908 (source #44) mentions a Mrs. Elizabeth BITZBERGER of Lancaster, PA. This raises the possibilities that there was an error on the Census of 1870, that Sarah could have been the granddaughter of Peter and Catharine Empfield or that Peter Empfield was married prior to Catharine.
Update: The Census of 1850 lists Sarah as being an Empfield. Since Elizabeth was five years old at that time, Sarah and Elizabeth were most likely sisters. It appears at this point that Empfield is a true lineage.
Addendum: The Hollidaysburg Register of 15 Jan 1879, in the obituary of John Empfield, Sr., mentions "survived by" Peter and Sarah "Wike" which may further add to any confusion.

On 24 Oct 1907, when the article appeared in the "Altoona Mirror" about the family reunion, she was said to be the fourth oldest person in Blair County. Parents: Peter EMPFIELD and Catharine HARTZELL.

She was married to Joseph Frank BRAWN on 24 Oct 1865.(2897) (1587) May also be spelled Emfield Children were: Fred Lewellyn BRAWN, Minnie F. BRAWN, Mary Abigail (Maime) BRAWN, Arabella BRAWN, Idabelle BRAWN.
