bullet Alexander EMPFIELD(2750) was born on 22 Jul 1826 in Indiana Co., Pa..(2751) He was baptized on 29 Jul 1827 in Indiana Co., Pa.. (2752) Sponsor was his mother He appeared on the census in 1850 in Kiskiminetas, Twp., Armstrong County, Pa..(2753) He appeared on the census in 1860 in Apple Creek Twp., Cape Girardeau County, MO.(2754) The conclusion, of course, is that Alexander and Sarah Jane Empfield migrated to Missouri between 1850 and 1860. He died on 26 Mar 1869 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.. (2755) He appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Twp., Bollinger County, MO.(2756) Obviously, if Alexander Empfield died in 1869, the family may be found in this residence, but Alexander should not. Carolyn M Bartels has published a book entitled "The Civil War in
Missouri Day By Day 1861-1865"

Aug 25, 1863 says "An escort of about 14 men from Lebanon (Militia) to
Waynesville was attacked by about 25 to 30 Confederates. A command of about
35 men has been sent to the California House and another 14 men in another
direction after this Confederate command. A Citizen, Mr McCain, brought in
the wounded and killed. Also today Lieutenant J.G. Lindsay had a fight near
Independence at sunrise."

Note: Apparently, Edward J. Wurtz implies that there is a connection to Alexander Empfield with the above notation.

A finding on April 22, 2007, does not show Alexander as one of Peter's and Mary's children. There is also a gap in the birth years between 1812 and 1826 when Alexander was born. Either Peter remarried or Alexander belongs to another family or was being cared for by a family member. Parents: Peter EMPFIELD and Mary HART.

He was married to Sarah Jane WARNER on 29 Oct 1846 in Armstrong Co., Pa.. (2757)(2758) Children were: James M. EMPFIELD.

(2760) He died before Jul 1927.(2761) His birth year would have made his mother 57 years old making this an unlikely event.
Either the birth year was wrong, or he is not the son of Catherine ...perhaps a grandson or other relative. Parents: Peter EMPFIELD and Sarah ----.

He was married to Henrietta HARTLE on 2 Aug 1899 in Hollidaysburg, Blair Co., Pa.. (2762) Married by Levi Leedom, Justice of the Peace

She resided on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa.. (2770) She resided in 1908 in Lancaster, Lancaster Co., Pa.. (2771) She died on 19 Jan 1923. bullet George EMPFIELD was born on 13 Sep 1841 in Logan Township, Huntingdon Co., Pa.. (2774)(2775) (2776) Blair County was formed in 1846 and did not yet exist. He resided on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa..(2777) He resided in 1908 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa.. (2778) He died on 19 Nov 1915 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa..(2779) (2780)(2781) A record or Web page of the Rootsweb page for Blair Co., as per the Blair Co. Genealogy Society, may state that George Emfield died on 13 Nov 1915. This is incorrect. The tombstone clearly shows a date of 19 Nov as previously stated in other genealogical records and in this database. He served in the military Civil War in Co. F, 76th Reg., Pa. From "Soldiers of Blair County":
"Company F, was recruited principally at Altoona, an contained one hundred and twelve men, under the command of Captain Henry Wayne, Captain Joseph R. Findley, Captain Thomas L. McGlathery, First Lieutenant George H. Gwin, Second Lieutenant John Jubert, all of Altoona, and Second Lieutenant Joseph W. Cannon of Bellwood."

The 76th Regiment engaged in the following battles before George Empfield was wounded and captured at the battle of Fort Wagner as a prisoner of war on 10 July 1863:

Charleston, South Carolina, June 16, 1862
Pocotaligo, South Carolina, Oct 22, 1862
Fort Wagner, South Carolina, July 10, 1863 He served in the military Civil War in Co. E, 21st Veterans Reserve Corp..(2784) (2785) Volunteered, but was a disabled veteran as a result of battle action in the 76 Infantry. No children. Parents: Peter EMPFIELD and Catharine HARTZELL.

He was married to Rachel Ann GLASGOW on 16 Sep 1868 in Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa.. (2786)(2787) Married by Rev. Robert M. Wallace, first and only marriage of this couple. No children recorded in this marriage.

A pension record dated 4 July 1898, states a marriage date of 20 Sept. 1867, signed with an "X" and witnessed by J. P. McKnight;
Bureau of Pensions record dated 10 March 1915 states a marriage date of 16 Sept. 1868, but there was no witness to the "X" mark for the signature.
both records state the marriage was performed by Rev. Robert or R. M. Wallace

There is no clear explanation for the difference in the two dates for this marriage. After finding the same marriage date on the Web for an Empfield FTW, it was decided to change it to 16 Sep 1868.

bulletHannah EMPFIELD(2796). Parents: Georg Ludwig EMFIELD and Barbara ----.

bulletIra Benton EMPFIELD was born about 1878. He was a Laborer on 22 Dec 1899. (2797) He resided on 22 Dec 1899 in Mines, PA. (2798) This was an entry on a file card at Baker Mansion, Altoona PA. His brother Archie's records indicates he was born at Springfield Mines. He died before Jul 1927.(2799) His birth year would have made his mother 61 years old making this an unlikely event.
Either the birth year was wrong, or he is not the son of Catherine ...perhaps a grandson or other relative. Parents: Peter EMPFIELD and Sarah ----.

He was married to Evelinea KIFER on 22 Dec 1899 in Barbara, Pa.. (2800) Married by James F. Likens, Justice of the Peace

bulletJames M. EMPFIELD was born on 11 May 1861 in Missouri. (2806) Parents: Alexander EMPFIELD and Sarah Jane WARNER.

bullet John EMPFIELD was born about 1782 in Indiana Co., Pa.. (2808)(2809) He resided on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa.. (2810)(2811) He died on 7 Jan 1879 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(2812) (2813) (2814) see Peter EMPFIELD entry. This person appears in the 1850 census as being 64 years old and is the very next dwelling record. It is possible that John could be Peter's father.
The link can only be made after confirmation of this hypothesis.
Also, Peter has a son named John H.
Since the evidence is strong, link is being made to Peter in May 1996 so that the Pedigree chart can be tested and solicited for further confirmation.
The Hollidaysburg Register of 15 Jan 1879, in the obituary of John Empfield, seems to confirm the connection as stated. Parents: Georg Ludwig EMFIELD and Barbara ----.

He was married to Mary Ann TICE in Indiana Co., Pa.. (2815)(2816) Children were: Peter EMPFIELD, John EMPFIELD Jr., Sarah EMPFIELD, Pauline EMPFIELD, Susan EMPFIELD.

bullet John EMPFIELD Jr. was born about 1817 in Pennsylvania. He appeared on the census on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa.. (2817) He was a carpenter on 10 Oct 1850 in Blair Co., Pa.. (2818) He resided Logan Township in 1851 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa.. (2819) see general notes on Peter and John Empfield (Sr.). This evidence seems very strong that the John of this entry is the son of the other John Empfield (born abt 1786). However, additional confirmation is suggested, such as an earlier census than 1850 that shows John and John Empfield in the same household. Parents: John EMPFIELD and Mary Ann TICE.

He was married to Mary A. ----. Children were: David EMPFIELD, Nancy EMPFIELD, Julia A. EMPFIELD .

bullet John EMPFIELD was born in Jun 1812 in Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., Pa.. (2820) He died on 1 Oct 1865. (2821) Parents: Peter EMPFIELD and Mary HART.

He was married to Sarah BOWERS. (2822) Children were: Peter EMPFIELD.

He was married to Elizabeth MEICKSEL in Jul 1858 in Indiana Co., Pa..(2823)

bullet John H. EMPFIELD(2824) was born about 1848 in Pennsylvania.(2825) He resided on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa.. (2826) He appeared on the census on 10 Oct 1850 in Antis Township, Bellwood, Blair Co., Pa..(2827) He was a Railroad Laborer on 28 Jul 1870 in Logan Township, Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(2828) He resided in 1908 in Juniata, Blair Co., Pa.. He died before Jul 1927.(2829) His mother's obituary of 1908 lists his middle initial as H. The census of 1870 lists his middle initial as W. The census of 1850 lists H. as the middle initial. Most likely, "H" is correct.

there is an article in the Altoona "Morning Tribune," Thursday, 24 September, 1874 that tells the story of a tragic late night carriage accident that claimed the lives of a young couple. The article mentions that a John EMPFIELD and his sons David and Emanuel were the first on the scene as the result of the driver's plea for help. It is not known as of December 20, 1998, by this compiler if this is the same John Empfield as this John. However, in 1874, this John Empfield would have been about 26 years old, old enough to be married and have two sons. Further research is needed to confirm this link.
This article is reprinted in the Blair Co. Genealogical Society Newsletter, Sept./Oct./Nov. 1998, Volume 19, No. 3, on page 31 with John Empfield mentioned on page 32. Parents: Peter EMPFIELD and Catharine HARTZELL.
