Veronica SCHENK was born about 1684 in Canton Bern, Switzerland or Germany.⁽⁸¹⁸²⁾⁽⁸¹⁸³⁾⁽⁸¹⁸⁴⁾ No record of Veronica's birth found. Because of her husband's older age when the second son was born (48), John Slabaugh speculates that Veronica may have been John's second wife. If true, this would mean that Veronica was possibly born in Germany.

The LDS record indicates a more conclusive estimate of the year of birth. She died after 1737 in Hammer Creek, Elizabeth Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa..⁽⁸¹⁸⁵⁾⁽⁸¹⁸⁶⁾ She immigrated on 24 Sep 1737 to Philadelphia.⁽⁸¹⁸⁷⁾ On the ship "Virtuous Grace." Arrived with four sons, Christian, John, Henry, and Samuel, and followed son (or stepson) Matthias, brother-in-law Hans, and later sons Daniel and Jacob.

Shortly before his death, her husband John is reported to have urged Veronica to emigrate to America. Veronica may not have been the mother of John's first son, Daniel, nor the second child, Matthias.

She was married to Daniel or Hans STAUFFER about 1714 in Ibersheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Palatinate, Germany.⁽⁸¹⁸⁸⁾ John Slabaugh hypothesizes that Veronica may have been John's second wife because he was 55 when he died and she outlived him to emigrate to America and because of the surname and possible connection to John's daughter-in-law Catherine SHANK.

John was 48 when his second son was born. His first son, Mattias, was said to be an older son when he emigrated with his uncle in 1710 to America.

There are indications that Daniel was indeed much older than Veronica and it is likely that Daniel was previously married. It seems logical to assume that the first two sons of Daniel, who moved to America ahead of Veronica were from a different marriage.

The Henry Landis farm house in Warwick Twp., which is no longer standing, was located on the south side of the Hammer Creek, about 100 yards southwest of the covered bridge on Erb's Bridge Rd.. The property was sold to his son-in-law, John Schrantz, following the death of his wife Veronica.
