Died at 7:45 p.m. Harry C. Brode or Brodi, who signed the death certificate, "became steward at the Blair County Home, or almshouse, in 1927, and in April 1928 was elected superintendent. He directs the activities of the home and farm, while Mrs. Brode is matron." "The almshouse in Allegheny Township, near Hollidaysburg, was first occupied in 1850; destroyed by fire in 1891; and new building erected in 1893. Then, the directors of the Poor were Hiram H. Pensyl, James Stiffler, and A. Lee Fleck." (It is not clear if they were directors in the 1800s or around 1931 when the reference was published. from Tarring S. Davis, ed., "A History of Blair County Pennsylvania," Vol. 1 (Harrisburg: National Historical Association, Inc., 1931), p. 279 He was buried on 7 Jun 1930 in Fairview Cemetery, Blair Co., Altoona, PA. (7213)(7214) (7215)(7216) (7217) Information found on 15 Feb 1997 in the Fairview Cemetery book published by the Blair Co. Genealogical Society. According to this information, Felix McQuade was buried in the "Reserve" section of the cemetery without a tombstone. The book states that the: "Reserve - was a section used as a holding place for many persons who were moved to a permanent lot later. Some remained in Reserve and tombstones were placed on some of the graves. Many remained here with no stones. These seemed to be single graves and not the eight grave plots like the rest of the cemetery." 20 Feb 1996 - According to Nancy Brown of Fairview Cemetery Co., the funeral was handled by Gilden Barton Funeral Home of Altoona, which is still in business as of this date. A written inquiry has been sent. Ms. Brown states that without a marker or stone, the actual grave would be difficult to locate. He immigrated prior to 1903 or 1905 to Wicklow or Dublin, Ireland. County unknown in Ireland or actual birthplace. Unknown as to why Wicklow or Dublin was selected, as opposed to county Monaghan where most McQuades originate. Oral tradition? Immigration record shows a Felix McQuade, age 59, arriving at Ellis Island from Markethill, County Armagh, Ireland, on 13 Aug 1905. Since his daughter Margaret is believed to have died between 1904 and 1907, this would certainly make sense. Investigation continues to pursue the city from which this Felix originated in Ireland, but not completed as of March 2002. With the modified birth year of 1857, this would set his age on the above immigration date as 48. This presents a discrepancy with the above person. Suggest a new Ellis Island search be done. Oct. 1996. Investigating possibility that his real name is John L. McQuade. A record of death of this person, 4 June 1930, is recorded under Letters of Administration in the Blair County Wills Index. A copy of the death certificate has been requested. The death certificate was received and it does not appear that John is the person we are looking for. The person is only 49 years old, too young to have been the grandfather of Helen Bunyon Davis. Feb. 1997 - See Burial Note. The Fairview Cemetery book (BCGS) shows his name to be Felix McQuade. Death certificate of Felix McQuade received March 1997 and states that his date of birth was March 12, 1857, making him 72 at death, not 82. The funeral record of Gilden Barton Funeral home agrees with this date of birth. One must, however, remain open to the possibility that the obituary is correct, and not the death certificate or funeral record, but it should be noted that both expressed his age in years, months, and days. A birth year of 1857 would fit better with the birth years of his daughter Margaret, who was born about 1883. If he is the same Felix McQuade who arrived from Markethill, County Armagh, Ireland, on 14 August 1905 and as stated at Ellis Island that he was 59 years old, then consider his birth date as possibly being 12 March 1859, if calculated from his date of death, on 12 March 1858. The ship manifest of August 1905 shows a Felix McQuade, age 59 from Markethill, County Armaugh, Ireland. Is it possible that the death certificate is incorrect and that he was actually around 82 at death? An LDS IGI source states that Margaret's father's name was Philip, however, evidence is weak since documentation is unknown. It is possible, however, that Felix is a nickname for Philip.
