Birth name of Abraham was unknown by wife and daughter until between 1996 and 1999 when family history study began. He was educated Grammar school - Grades 1 to 4 between 1924 and 1927 in P.S. 39, Manhattan, NY.⁽⁹⁴⁴⁹⁾ He was educated Grammar School - Grades 5 and 6 between 1928 and 1929 in P.S. 26, Bronx, NY.⁽⁹⁴⁵⁰⁾ He was educated Junior High School - Grades 7 to 9 between 1930 and 1932 in P.S. 82, Bronx, NY.⁽⁹⁴⁵¹⁾ He was educated High School - Grades 10 and 11 between 1933 and 1934 in Evander Childs.⁽⁹⁴⁵²⁾ According to his 1951 personal history form, Louis stated that he did not graduate from high school in 1934, but he may have attended evening high school classes 1934 to 1936, although again, he states that he did not graduate. It is possible, since this is during the Great Depression, that he had to work to help support the family, although he does not record any employment prior to 1939 on the personal history form. Louis did move with his family in 1937. He died on 12 Mar 2003 in Lewisberry, York County, PA. Died in nursing home after only a week and a half of residence. Young Man!

That's what I'll always remember when I think of Lou.
How he would stand there and address us as "Young Man".
His simple words would encourage us to believe we were important and destined for greater things in life.

Listening to his lessons, we did succeed in anything that we set out to accomplish. And, most importantly, appreciated those who provided the love and encouragement to fulfill those dreams.

Lou saw in all of us the greatness that we are capable of achieving. Encouraged by his kindness, we strived to measure up to his beliefs in the greatness of human beings.

Now, we must say good bye to someone who impacted our lives profoundly. And we should live on and show that Lou's examples made a significant difference in all our lives and to the human race.

He was married to Mollie COHEN abt 1912 or 1913 in Brooklyn, NY. Died prior to Mollie. His death certificate states that he had been in the Bronx for 45 years which would have meant about 1924. Mollie's death certificate states that she had been in the Bronx 60 years. The oldest son, Jacob, was 9 years old in May 1923 when Sam was naturalized (abt 1914). Assuming they were married when the children were born, marriage record search should start with 1912, then 1913, then earlier. Children were: Jacob "Jack" WELKES, Louis (Abraham) WELKES.
